I don’t mean to be harsh, but the QNAP developed apps are slow. I once thought that was related to my Internet speed, but realized that was not the case. By replacing QNAP Apps with third party apps, you can access to your files with a even-faster-than-google-drive speed.

Slow App? Slow Internet? Slow NAS?

If you are using the QNAP Apps, you may realize the speed are mostly slow. Whenever we open QFile, it logins to your NAS, loading… for a long… time. Then you can get a list of your documents. It really took a minute to have the access to one document.

I originally thought that was related to the Internet speed problem, or my NAS was not as powerful as Google Drive.

Credit to some browsing on reddit, those comments made me do the experiment. And eventually, that was NOT the case. The reason for such slowness is because of the crappy mobile apps written.

I don’t want to be too harsh to QNAP, for they focus more on the hardware advancement, and their software team is quite greedy in providing a lot of services and apps. There is a Chinese idiom saying that being greedy will end up in poverty. That’s exactly the case for QNAP.

Long story short, if we replace the QFile with other app that supports Webdav, the loading speed is even faster that Google Drive!

How to replace QFile?

To make your file accessible with other apps, you have to enable some file sharing protocol on your NAS.

I would suggest Webdav, for this protocol is quite universal and versatile, you can access it from your Mac / PC / Linux / Android App / iOS Apps.

If you are a student or scholar, you may also use Zotero to manage your research documents, or use Joplin to store your notes. All these software supports Webdav. With one protocol enabled, we can enjoy multiple services. (Fewer protocols enabled mean fewer ports to be exploited by hackers.)

And here are the steps of enabling Webdav on your NAS.
